“The Weight”

After the Boston Marathon bombing, and in other times of sorrow since, I have watched and listened again and again. It’s never made me feel better, but it’s made me feel. That’s the best explanation I can offer. Maybe you will find it helpful too. Mavis Staples, Nick Lowe, and Wilco rehearse Robbie Robertson’s “The Weight.” Filmed by Zoran Orlic at the Civic Opera House, Chicago, December 2011.

Michael, thank you for this moment of respite from a horrible day. In exchange, I'll share what I turn to when my heart is heavy. Abdullah Ibrahim helps me to remember that for all the woe in the world, there is yet beauty and peace to be known.

Thanks for that. I’ve known his playing for a long time (back to LPs when he was Dollar Brand). I’m going to make the time to watch and listen later tonight.

I finally got to listen all the way through — a beautiful performance. I was especially happy to hear “Ubu-Suku,” which took over my mind a few years back. (It’s the piece that sounds like “I’m Getting Sentimental Over You” at the start.)

I'm glad you enjoyed it. In an idiom that prizes technical virtuosity, sometimes to the detriment of feeling, Ibrahim's comparatively simple, soulful delivery is a balm to my heart and ears.
