Sam Ervin, Mongol user

Watching Dick Cavett’s Watergate on PBS tonight, I was startled to see Senator Sam Ervin (D, North Carolina) holding a Mongol. I went looking online.

[My caption: “Speak folksily and carry a sharp Mongol.” From U.S. News & World Report. No identification, but clearly from the Watergate hearings. That’s Samuel Dash to Ervin’s left. Click for a larger view.]

I remember Ervin from the Watergate hearings. I was 14.

Imagine my surprise to find him in the pages of the book I'm currently reading, Ari Berman's Give Us the Ballot, only this time it's 10 years earlier and he's leading the fight in the House against the Voting Rights Act.

He's in a Life magazine story about it: he was one of the filibustering senators. I never knew that when I was watching the Watergate hearings. He seemed like someone from a Capra movie.
