A pipe with a cigar in it

Navigating the parking lot of my local multinational retail corporation, I noticed a man behind the wheel of a station wagon. He was smoking a pipe with a cigar in it. The bowl of his pipe held perhaps three or four inches of cigar.

Men do smoke in this manner. Women too. Card Cow has proof that even roosters enjoy a cigar in a pipe. The why though puzzles me. Can anyone suggest an answer?

[I stopped smoking cigarettes almost twenty-three years ago. But sometimes, still, je veux fumer.]

I don't know, Michael, but one answer might be economy. There's no butt to discard, so no tobacco is wasted. It seems easier to unwrap the cigar so that only the tobacco goes into the pipe's bowl, but doing so would deprive the smoker of the additional pleasure of smoking the wrapper. According to Wikipedia, the cigar's wrapper is often used to describe the cigar's taste or character. But really, I'm just guessing.

Cigars in pipes are no different than cigarettes in holders. Some say taste, and some say not having the lips contacting the product making it wet, while others like the look of it. And there can be no butt to waste. People are different; ain't life fine therefore. If we were all the same....

Thanks for the suggestions, Stefan and Anon. This practice seems to puzzle even pipe smokers, as this thread suggests. Getting extra mileage from the cigar seems to me the likeliest explanation.
