9 - 6 = 3

[Hi and Lois, September 6, 2008.]

Shouldn't that arithmetic problem be on the blackboard, where it belongs?

The levitating oval and triangle on the dresser must be a perfume bottle. But it took me several long looks to figure out the objects stuck in the door. Fishhooks? Safety pins? Darts? If you give up and would like to see my best guess, highlight the empty space following the colon: perspiration.

[Second-guessing: that could be an Ad Reinhardt, not a blackboard.]

I'm guessing that stuff in the door is sweat, and the math problem doesn't equal 3 but "Sept 6". Now to highlight and see if we agree...

Good on the sweat. But look at Hi's shirt! That problem belongs on the blackboard, says I. : )

Because I could not stop for death--
He kindly stopped for me--
The Carriage held but just Ourselves--
And Immortality.
We slowly drove--He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility--
We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess--in the Ring--
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain--
We passed the setting Sun--
Or rather--He passed Us--
The Dews drew quivering and chill--
For only Gossamer, my Gown--
Mt Tippet--only Tulle--

Would I be amiss to complain that "me" and "Immortality" don't exactly rhyme, or "Ring" and "Sun," or especially "chill" and "Tulle"? And what the hell is she doing with the capitalization, aren't "labor" and "leisure" nouns? Or that Ernie Bushmiller would make better rhymes? It's poetic license, the big picture, the "High and Lois School of Poetics."

Did you like the hidden equation, George?

Emily Dickinson and William Carlos Williams are for me the most important figures in American poetry.

I did think that was clever, and believe I tried tried tried to resist getting back in the middle of this Hi and Lois thing. It's possible they're toying with you.

With me, with you, with us all. : )

Is there some kind of meta-joke I'm missing here? Sweat marks and strip date are cause for comment?

The scribble on Hi's shirt looks like a 3: 9-6=3. Given the blackboard on their wall, I couldn't resist.

9-6 would be the date....september 6th...and it looks like its neatly tucked into a corner out of the main viewing area.

I'm trying to figure out what's in Lois' hands. Cosmetic mirror? iPhone? Tricorder?
