Nick Cave offers advice to a thirteen-year-old correspondent asking how, in a world of hatred and disconnection, to live life to the fullest and not waste one’s potential. Cave’s reply begins: “Read.”
Wonderful stuff: read the full response.

my brother and i were talking about this as we walked past our old public library carnegie building. our mother used to take us on Saturday, we would check out the maximum books and mainly have them read by monday.
read, read is the best advice!!!

I’d like to imagine teachers reading this advice to students. But first it might be necessary to explain who Nick Cave is.
Maybe a teacher could have the kids write about a book on a file card. That's what my tech school teacher did since, by definition, tech students aren't academics but he still wanted us to do stuff outside of class. It was night school class for film-making majors, called "history of film."
As for academics, in my evening campus toastmaster club, of {1/3 undergrads, 1/3 grad students (for obvious reasons) and 1/3 members of the community,} someone I took to be a student said to me enthusiastically, "I've begun reading because of you!" I have no idea as to how I role modelled reading.
My thought is that kids could role model for each other too. Like primary grade show and tell, only with file cards.
Yes, when there’s s real live wire in a class, that can do a lot to get other students going.
