Domestic comedy

[Trump’s lawyers have been moaning about how many documents they have to read: War and Peace seventy-eight times a day, &c., &c.]

“Don’t these people have staffs? Or staves?”

Back in Boy Scouts, we would make our own staff, perhaps of hight to have a thumb rest, with measurement rings carved in. The plural was staves. I loved learning how to lash staves together; they still use lashing in the east to build bamboo scaffolding.

You’re right — that’s a non-musical plural too. (I think of it with barrel staves.) But in our house it’s gonna be musical.
