“Sully” Sullenberger on stuttering

Chesley B. Sullenberger, responding to Lara Trump’s mockery of Joe Biden:

A speech disorder is a lot easier to treat than a character defect. You become a true leader, not because of how you speak, but because of what you have to say — and the challenges you have overcome to help others.

I keep hearing people say that they like Trump because he says what he thinks. Well, okay...so, if you like him because he says what he thinks, and most of what he thinks is abhorrent, then what does that say about what you think?

I think we both know what the (non-)answer would be: He’s not afraid to say what he thinks; he’s not worried about being politically correct. It makes me realize that people were often laughing at Archie Bunker (also from Queens!) not because of his stupidity but because they took a kind of glee in hearing him say things forbidden by common decency.

I thin your realization re: Archie Bunker is correct.

Sully's first sentence is great. But his second sentence that you quote — "You become a true leader, not because of how you speak, but because of what you have to say" — well, as a blogger I have to say I'm not so sure of that.

You have a point there. He does add the idea of overcoming challenges, and I suppose he can define “true leader” as he pleases (a true leader as opposed to con artists and demagogues). But yes, you have a point.
