Mondays and Saturdays

News from joecab: Stan Newman, puzzle editor for Newsday, is posting old Monday (easy) and Saturday (hard) puzzles daily at GameLab. Stop me before I solve again!

In truth though, I haven’t solved at all — yet. GameLab requires that ad-blockers be disabled, and I’m happy to oblige, but navigating a puzzle once ads kick in, at least with Safari, at least on my Mac, too often feels like the olden days of dial-up. (And the ads, always changing, are mighty distracting.) Printing — at 90% — is a better option, with the grid and clues fitting on a single page.

Solve we must. Thanks, joecab.

My pleasure. I'm now seeing the ads so I just let the video run in the background silently and go do something else until I'm ready to print the puzzle.

I get a Skip Ad option after a few seconds, at least with longer videos.

Now I just set Safari to hide (cmd-H) with sound off (you can turn off system sound or just shut off sound for that particular tab), come back to it after a bit, and you don't have to see or hear a thing.

I've also done a little research and these puzzles ran as part of Netword, which must have been a site where he ran puzzles but still kept the rights to. They only ran Saturdays there too and he's already hitting July 2012, so these daily Hard puzzles won't be lasting forever.

I think I’m going to print a bunch to solve at my leisure. Right now the GameLab site is impossibly slow for me. I think it must be a problem on their end; it’s the only site I’ve been to in recent memory that’s hard to navigate. (Spin, ball, spin.)

And is it just me or are they noticeably easier than the Newsday ones? I'm ripping through these 2012s. And yet today's Newsday still sits there partially finished waiting for me to hopefully complete it...

Huh — I’ve found the 2012 ones a struggle on the screen. Maybe on paper it’ll be easier to concentrate. If you’re finding today’s Stumper difficult, you’re not gonna like my post. :)
