Today’s Saturday Stumper

Today’s Newsday Saturday Stumper, by Greg Johnson, looks rather difficult but might prove less so. (And what might that bode for next Saturday?) Only sixty-four words, with a fourteen- over a fifteen-letter answer in the north, and a fifteen- over a fourteen-letter answer in the south. My favorite long clue: 14-A, fifteen letters, “Noticeably neutral display.” I immediately thought of a song by The Specials.

Other clues I especially liked: 14-D, five letters, “Fare that was rare to air.” 20-D, six letters, “Gang leader on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.” 29-A, ten letters, “Frequent Broadway openings.” And for the news of the weird: 38-D, six letters, “Sir        Grenville Wodehouse.” No wonder he used initials.

No spoilers: the answers are in the comments.

BLANKEXPRESSION. (“Where — where — did you get that — blank — blank expression on your face?”) BSIDE. SPANKY. STAGEDOORS. PELHAM. (He went by the nickname “Plum.”)

I tried PARHAM first. I had to look up DR NO to break open the lower half of the puzzle.

I thought first of James Brown (who appeared in at least one of those crazy teenager movies). I think Turner’s recent flurry of Bond movies helped me out.

This may interest you:

Stan Newman posted over on Facebook that he's posting NEW Easy (Monday) and Hard (Saturday) puzzles every day:

www.tinyurl.com/easypuz

and

www.tinyurl.com/hardpuz

He says he can keep them coming if enough people play the archives, so I hope he gets lots of people trying them out. He also warns a brief video may play (I haven't seen one yet) and that he welcomes comments and suggestions.

Saturday every day? I think my mornings just got more complicated. :) Thanks for this news!

I’m going to try again. But I found that with my ad-blocker disabled (won’t load otherwise), the puzzle becomes slow and difficult to navigate once the video ads kick in.

I’ve just been printing them instead, but even that doesn’t work perfectly. (The clues at the bottom of the page get bumped to a second page.) I also noticed the puzzles have a 2012 copyright, so perhaps they may be new to us but actually ran in Newsday many years ago.
