Our new toaster (Cuisinart) has “multiple shade options.” Or as plain-speaking people might say, it toasts light and dark. Like every other working toaster.

Sounds like a case of schadentoaster to me.
That'd make a good New Yorker-style cartoon (Roz Chast?)--a toaster with designer "shade" names on the dial.
"Band-Aid" could be one...
I love Roz Chast, and I think she would enjoy such phrasing. “Shade” seems to be a standard word with toast now. I had, of course, no idea.
I think “Toast” would be a good shade. Also “Coffee” and “Tea.”
