Verb tenses are tricky with crosswords:
Today’s Newsday Saturday Stumper, by Brad Wilber, is difficult. There it is, sitting on the Newsday website. My portal: 13-Down, nine letters, “What the UN overlooks.” And then I stumbled and stumbled, and stumbled some more.
Today’s Newsday Saturday Stumper, by Brad Wilber, was difficult. There it is, now solved.
Some excellent clues:
28-Across, twelve letters, “The bright orange tangor, for one.” A bird? No.
39-Across, five letters, “Big name in African dramatics.” I knew I knew it.
49-Across, four letters, “Pan’s close relative.” The answer baffled me up to the moment I typed the clue here.
33-Down, nine letters, “Learned.” Yep.
But I’m still baffled by the answer for 46-Down, six letters, “Indoor transportation system.” A little help?

EASTRIVER. CITRUSHYBRID. ATHOL. (As in Fugard.) OMNI. SCHOLARLY. SORTER. But how is a sorter a transporation system?
SORTER: I suppose so if you are, in the olden days, a piece of mail or, in these new-fangled days, a courier parcel.
I probably got my commas wrong but parallel thoughts so early on a Saturday morning are not my strong suit.
Elaine thought of a laundry sorter — the various compartments on a wheeled frame. I can see both possibilities, but I still wouldn’t have thought of SORTER.
That bottom took a while. I really got stuck on ARABIST. Still sounds odd. And I was sure a bright orange tangor was a bird since I had that B--D at the end there already filled in.
And I do like tougher clues that work with you to arrive at the right answer. I never heard of that Nike show brand, but having the word "Conquering" in the clue sure helped get me there.
I even wondered if there’s such a thing as a hybrid bird. Same for me with Nike — the clue had a clue. ARABIST was clear to me from crosses. I had PRAGMATIC for PRACTICAL for a while — that area was really vexing for me.
As for what the UN overlooks, I suppose THESITEOFTHEORIGINALEBERHARDFABERPENCILFACTORY wouldn't have fit.
I suppose that would have been too easy, so...
A great answer!
