Roz Chast on her parents

Not behind The New Yorker paywall: Roz Chast’s “Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?” These pages are an excerpt from a graphic memoir of the same name, to be published in May. Good reading for children of all ages.

Wonderful cartoon.

Weird thing is, I was thinking last night how I needed to broach the subject of my end days with my daughter and grandson, neither of whom want to talk about it. (Frankly, neither do I, but somebody has to do it!)

I think I'll print out Roz's cartoon. Maybe that will get the ball rolling; you think?

I guess it would. I think this piece will be helpful to many people, and it’s generous of The New Yorker to make it available to all.

I'm sorry to be so slow! We have lived through this over the past...oh, 20+ years. (I am a First Line Baby Boomer; the DHubby pre-dates the Baby Boom.) My parents were incredibly hostile to the subject when I broached it; ten years later...they were floundering for solutions I had tried to introduce previously. The DHubby's mother moved here 10 years past....(her other choice was N Dakota)...and her decline occupied increasing amounts of time and energy. This cartoon account had me rolling in the aisles (such as they are...actually, it was just the breakfast area floor...) And everyone we know is telling us the same story. God help us all.
