This reminds me of a scene from Walker Percy's _The Moviegoer_, wherein the protagonist dumps his own pocket's contents onto a dresser top, then pokes through them, so as to see what he might learn about their owner.
Elaine has that novel somewhere — I’ll look for it.
Your memory just reminded me of an essay assignment I tried a long time ago — write about what the stuff on your desk reveals about you.
