As I am preparing to read _Ulysses_ for (yes, I confess it) the first time, would you have a recommendation regarding any particular edition?
I'd get the Modern Library edition, Timothy. The Gabler edition (Vintage) is pretty vexed.
Oh, also -- Don Gifford's Ulysses Annotated is tremendously helpful. It clears up all sorts of fact and reference without interpreting the novel for you. I'd recommend reading with this book nearby.
