No dropping out

These words must have made some younger viewers sit up straight. From President Barack Obama's address tonight to a joint session of Congress:

[D]ropping out of high school is no longer an option. It's not just quitting on yourself, it's quitting on your country — and this country needs and values the talents of every American.

I applaud his remarks on dropping out of school. He needs to talk about this issue frequently.

A 2008 New York Times article estimates that nationally, 70% of students who begin ninth grade graduate four years later.

It got our attention! I can never sit through the whole of these sorts of speeches but I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it (except for the constant standing ovations). That Obama is something special. But I have to wonder if he or his speech writer watched all the West Wing shows! I think there is some inspiration there, somewhere.
