Okay, the scary part about this. I thought that most newspapers are composed online. So if you had spell check on but maybe not set to correct as you type the text program would have caught or at least put a red line underneath the word.
Or in the alternate, they don't know how to spell it and made no attempt to find out what the spelling is.
I just tried in my email program deliberately trying to misspell it and spell checker caught it and spelled it correctly.
Or it could be like my elevator in an old workplace that had the sign: No tobacco or tobacco tobacco products. It was that way for 6 years that I know of before they finally put in new signs.

The Verrazano spelling was a conscious choice, which might make it worse than mere oversight. Or, since the people who chose one z had reasons to do so, not worse.
I would like to ride in an elevator that prohibited tobacco and tobacco tobacco products. I’d ask everyone to step to the front of the elevator so I could photograph that sign. :)
