I just came across an Alice Munro story that has a pretty good gag about penmanship. In the story ("Home"), which is apparently fairly autobiographical, the narrator, who like Munro is a successful writer, visits her childhood home where her elderly father, who has remarried after his first wife's death, has also taken up writing, just as a hobby. The stepmother says "His writing is very good excepting when he gets too tired... Anyway, it's better than yours."
Munro continues: "It took me a moment to figure out that she was talking about handwriting. That's what 'writing' has always meant around here. The other business was or is called 'making things up.'"
That’s a great moment. Thanks, Chris, for sharing it here.
