I’ve posted three WPA tax photographs of pickle-making establishments — 1, 2, 3 — each a lucky find. Monique Mulder and Paul van Ravestein the authors of The Pickled City: A Biography of New York Pickles, a book that I cited in that third post, consider the pickle far more methodically, tracking its journey from ancient Mesopotamia to Eastern Europe to the Lower East Side. The authors have a talk about their book, also an Instagram account. Incredibly deep research in the service of food and culture.

I've never been to New York City, but I loved that romantic look at pickles and artistic circles in the movie about that pickle guy, Crossing Delaney (street) ... I never knew such people myself, but I have been to a wine and cheese gallery showing.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a sweet movie. I’m thinking that there’s another one that’s pickle-centric — married couple, rebellious niece who comes to live with them — but I just can’t put my finger on the title.
ReplyDeleteNo Resrvations, a 2007 fim starring Catherine Zeta Jones and Aaron Eckhart and Abigail Breslin, a "remake" of a really great 2001 German film Mostly Martha.
