Earlier today I posted a passage from Nabokov’s Bend Sinister on the role of education in a police state. I didn’t expect this New York Times article (gift link) to appear on the same day: “New Federal Guidelines Threaten Almost Half of Graduate Arts Programs.”

ReplyDeleteBased on what I read in my subscription to "Inside Higher Ed" it is "as if" the project 2025 guys are flooding the zone with a vengeance to curb higher ed to prevent graduates who can think. You wouldn't think the anti-democrats would think that far ahead, anymore than tobacco guys would get future smokers to vape as kids, but I guess they do have ideals.
Meanwhile, I make no extra money, later, if the taxpayer subsidizes me for a few years in the navy or the peace corps. But I don't do those things for the money or the stockholders. I do it for ideals, because, to quote a storefront in town, art is vital.
It’s clear, for sure, that these people have no real use for the arts and humanities. Monuments, fountains, yes. The freedom to use one’s imagination and intellect, no.
