Whelans appears to have been on 44th and Broadway when the Howard Johnson's is now (not 8th) correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for that photograph, Anon. I’m just quoting the NYPL’s description, which might not be correct. Could the location have changed between 1936 and 1952 (when Sailor Beware was released)? Could there have been drugstores at both locations? (Nowadays, it seems that every other intersection has a Duane Reade store.)
