My 3rd grade teacher took all of 30 to 45 minutes to explain the difference between "x and I" and "x and me". Add to that a little re-enforcement to the lesson throughout the rest of the school year. Forty-five years later and it is still with me.
I suspect that 3rd grade teachers haven't spent that half-hour on the subject in the last 30 to 35 years.
I can remember being corrected as a kid (thanks, Mom and Dad) and doing the correcting as a parent.
I came of age diagramming sentences. But the animus against “grammar” in classrooms is often strong.
