A mystery of the deep

Do you know what you’re seeing here?

Garlic cloves and maybe dill seeds in a pickle jar?

It appears to be some kind of marine invertebrate living inside a glass bottle.

Yes, it’s pickles in progress. We did some canning yesterday. As Elaine discovered the first time she made pickles, and as I discovered last night, garlic can turn blue. Perfectly safe.

Notice the word WIDE on the jar, though I didn’t notice it until after I took the photo.

Oh — yes, they’re dill seeds. And I would strongly endorse homemade pickles (from homegrown cucumbers) — so much better than anything in the store.

Ha! I saw some sort of scary dead eel thing--never even thought of pickles!

Not all homemade pickles are created equal--I've had some pretty nasty ones.

Yikes to both dead eels and bad pickles. By the way, there’s an entire Andy Griffith episode about how terrible Aunt Bee’s pickles are.

I even thought of that episode as I wrote the comment...!
