The Specialist

Casey Miner’s The Specialist is a lively, eye-opening podcast that focuses on unusual occupations: ice guy, lice lady, zoo chef. There’s a brand-new (and much darker) episode just out: search-and-rescue tracker.

One of my secret vices: Watching Mantracker (in reruns) with Terry Grant. I think it's the only reality show I've ever watched.

Like The Most Dangerous Game ?

Grant does search and rescue. The premise was two people would be given a head start and would have 48 hours (I think) to get to a certain place without Grant and his local guide (on horseback) catching them. Filmed in wilderness areas with very tough terrain. The scenery was amazing, and it was interesting to learn about subtle marks people leave behind as they travel (keeping in mind in search and rescue, people want to be found). Grant also seemed to take it very seriously and would get genuinely angry at some of the nastier tricks his targets would play on him (thinks like bear urine tossed at the horses, if I remember right). You don't mess with a cowboy's (rental) horse. For me there was eye candy (Grant and the scenery), horses, and education. HORSES.

(You would think horses would be a huge advantage, but in the woods they're a drawback.)

As a longtime fan of hide and seek, I’d say that sounds like a fun show. Thanks for the explanation.
