Not enough

President Barack Obama on the mass killing today at Umpqua Community College, Roseburg, Oregon:

“Our thoughts and prayers are not enough. It’s not enough. It does not capture the heartache and grief and anger that we should feel. And it does nothing to prevent this carnage from being inflicted some place else in America, next week or a couple of months from now. . . .

“It cannot be this easy for someone who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun. . . .

“This is a political choice that we make — to allow this to happen every few months in America. We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction.”

I can't even hope anymore.

Maybe tomorrow or next year, but not today.

Drives me nuts that we dance around this issue like it's a powerful sacred cow. I say, if they want the Constitution, then stick to the Constitution. Guns, sure, IF there is a "well regulated militia." They have to have an armory to hold all weapons, drill all day every Saturday, be at least 21 years of age... .

Guns have been so fetishized in this country, and it's not based on real data. Lots of suicides, accidents with children, guns turned on owners. But the Freedom! (and masculinity) aspect of it silences all criticism.

Thanks for posting this. I can't even go there anymore, so I appreciate succinct summings up from folks who can filter it for me. My friends (on and offline) and my main news source.

Anyway, yeah, Obama got that right. It's just insane we've allowed mass shootings to become a "normal" feature of American life.
