Shocked? Nope. Normal, and been that way for a long time. And now a little secret: Your university is just as fine as Harvard. It depends only on the student and teacher relationship. Some good and some bad. Harvard has its share of the bad. Surprise? Nope. It's just that the brand name has become sullied. Rightly.

In some ways I agree: you can get a great education anywhere. But some schools have resources that those asked to “do more with less” cannot imagine. See this post, for instance.

"But some schools have resources that those asked to 'do more with less' cannot imagine." This of course explains why fully half of one government class was just exposed for plagiarism in a school with all those "resources" that others do not have. Values are resources, and my City College education has proven the equal of a couple of the Harvard graduates whom I have bested on a number of occasions. Sir, your school is the equal of Harvard, if in but one classroom there is real, imaginative and motivating education going on. Hurray for a little corner of Illinois which hasn't made it into the scandal revealing news items.
