Donald J. Sobol (1924–2012)

Donald J. Sobol, the creator of Encyclopedia Brown, has died at the age of eighty-seven.

I caught on to the Encyclopedia Brown books in 2008. They’re wonderful. I’m not sure how I managed not to figure that out earlier.

Here’s a post that reproduces an illustration from the first Brown book, Encyclopedia Brown, Boy Detective (1963). Notice the orange crate.

E.B. was what got me very interested in reading early on. I didn't mind the Hardy Boys, but I enjoyed E.B. much more.

Michael, what were some of the books (or comics, etc.) that you read when you were a kid?

The key book of my kidhood was Clifford Hicks’s novel Alvin’s Secret Code. I’ve written about that book in a number of posts. I liked the Danny Dunn series, Man from U.N.C.L.E. books, and How and Why books. I spent a lot of time reading the World Book Encyclopedia and comic books. No classic children’s lit, ever.

My favorite book from Childhood was Knight's Castle by Edward Eager. Year's later I tried to track it down for my son, but could remember neither the title not the Author. A helpful librarian was able to identify it [with quite a bit of effort] from what I remembered of the plot. Great piece of detective work, I thought.

Still more years later, I discovered that Eager was from Toledo, OH - my home town.

Cheers!
