Orange tree art

[Photograph by Michael Leddy. Click for a larger view.]

This orange tree stands in front of a house on a Los Angeles street, as if it were an everyday thing for an orange tree to stand in front of a house on a Los Angeles street. Which, in California, it is. Why, you can reach out anywhere and pick an orange.

[Elaine and I went out to Los Angeles last week for Thanksgiving. You can’t really reach out anywhere and pick an orange, but you can get bonus points if you know the source for that claim.]

I want to say "grapes of wrath", but thinking that it's actually something else. Is it more recent than that?

Don't want the bonus points. Gotta orange tree, grapefruit tree, tangerine tree, lime tree, bay tree, pepper tree and a few small but thriving redwoods. Can't beat the climate, and thanks for visiting.

When I lived in Sunnyvale (1 juice orange tree, 2 navel oranges, 1 lime, 1 peach, 2 apple, 2 grapefruit--all in a suburban Sunnyvale yard)--someone of Oriental origin rang my bell and wanted to pick my oranges. I said, "NO!" She insisted she wanted them, and I insisted they were daily food for our family. I don't know if it was a language barrier or what, but she left mad...and I wondered why she had the idea that 'white people' ate only food from grocery stores! (I had a huge backyard garden.)

We had a charity ask to pick a large grapefruit to provide food for the hungry. It ended up, because we checked later, being sold at a local farmers' market. When asked about this, the "charity" got angry. When asked about the accounting for the sales made, they raged at us. The grapefruit tree still yields its fruit in season, and the "charity" comes not around any longer. Sometimes a charlatan is a charlatan. But what remains is that a grapefruit is a grapefruit. Or three hundred pounds of grapefruit which now find their way to a church social or four.
